Is the PS5 Backwards Compatible?

Gamers exhibited a great deal of excitement when the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 was launched. Though the PS5 came with many new features and games, the gaming community has some concerns: compatibility.

Some relief was found when they experienced that most PS4 games, 4,000+, are working fine on the newer PlayStation.

The primary concern arose when some US PlayStation games issued a warning that they may not work well on the PS5 console. Although this warning doesn’t necessarily mean that the PS4 games wouldn’t work on PS5, it could mean that some PS4 game features might not translate in the newer console.

Where Did The Issue Arise?

Issues arose when we first tried to load a PS4 game from the external storage of the PS5. The console displayed a ‘Rebuild Database’ error, which leads to the corruption of game’s database.

This problem arose on Ubisoft’s Assassin's Creed Syndicate. The game exhibited an unexpected error while running. The Ubisoft platform is trying to fix these issues as soon as possible, and they have assured the community that Assassin's Creed Syndicate would work on the PS5 console. We tested the game and found that it’s running better now, despite having minor glitches.

How To Find Out Which PS4 Games Are Not Compatible With PS5?

There is a neat tool on Github, where a list is compiled that will show the compatibility status of the PS4 games on the PS5. You can filter the list by selecting “Bootable” on the PS5 BC section and select the Title Region to Up.

We followed this method and came up with a total of almost 115 games.  After review, it was some relief to know that these PS4 games had no significant complicated errors on the PS5.

The following games had issues:

  1. Flinthook:

The Flinthook game was not as fast on the PlayStation 5 as it was on the PS4.

  1. Everybody’s Golf:

The game's scenery was not as intimidating as we see it on the PS4 –Blurry trees and odd scenes. The PS5 version of Everybody’s Golf is under construction.

  1. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice:

The opening graphics were a disappointment in PS5.

Some other games like Grip and PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate also had small issues.
